Savings Plans break-even calculator

Savings Plans cost and break-even calculator

Enter the On-Demand-equivalent rate of the usage a plan would cover, the plan's upfront payment and hourly commitment, the term and the share of the commitment you expect to use. The calculator shows the cost comparison over the term, the cash break-even month and the utilization at which the plan stops costing more than On-Demand.

This tool compares the numbers you enter. It does not know your workload or your options, and it does not recommend a purchase.

What the usage the plan would cover costs at On-Demand rates, per hour, if the whole commitment were used. Take it from your own usage data or from the Savings Plans recommendation in AWS Cost Explorer.

Enter 0 if the plan has no upfront payment. A blank field is not treated as 0.

The recurring hourly commitment you would pay. Enter 0 for All Upfront. You commit to this amount for every hour of the term, so an unused commitment is still a cost.

AWS offers one-year and three-year terms.

The share of the commitment that eligible usage will actually consume. 100 means every committed hour is used.

Assumptions and limits

Cost comparison treats an upfront payment as part of the total cost of the term. Cash break-even looks at timing: the month in which the cumulative On-Demand spend you avoid has caught up with the cash you paid on the commitment. They answer different questions, and neither is advice to buy.

Compute and EC2 Instance Savings Plans

A Savings Plan is a commitment to a consistent amount of compute usage, measured per hour, for a one- or three-year term. The terms of the commitment cannot be changed after purchase.

Compute Savings Plans apply to EC2 usage regardless of instance family, size, Region, operating system or tenancy, and also to Fargate and Lambda. EC2 Instance Savings Plans are tied to an instance family in a chosen Region. AWS states maximum savings of up to 66% off On-Demand for Compute Savings Plans and up to 72% for EC2 Instance Savings Plans; these are AWS's stated ceilings, not a rate this calculator applies, and your rate depends on the plan, term and payment option you choose.
