Showback shows team-level spend, broken down by the services and resources that specific team owns, compared to prior periods, with context about what drove the cost. The bill answers "what did we spend?" Showback answers "who spent what, on what, and is that expected?" The latter is the information needed to optimize.
What level of tagging coverage is needed to start showback?
Eighty percent is the practical minimum — below that, the untagged spend generates more questions than the tagged data answers. Publish your first showback reports when coverage exceeds 80%, with a clear note explaining that X% of spend is currently unattributed and is being absorbed centrally. This is more useful than waiting for perfect coverage, and the act of publishing reports with visible coverage gaps creates organizational pressure to close them.
Should we show teams their allocated share of shared costs?
Yes, but explain the methodology clearly the first time. Teams that see shared networking or security costs in their showback report will ask "why am I paying for this?"
